World renowned, Grammy nominated pianist and composer Yanni, will be performing in Colombo next month, organisers announced today.
As per schedule, Yanni will perform at the Sugadathasa Indoor Stadium on April 20 in a mega concert organised by Wizcraft, AKG Events and Amuseum Special Events.
Yanni’s visit to Sri Lanka will be part of a world tour during which he will be promoting his latest album ‘Inspirato’.
Beginning this month, Yanni is taking his music on an extensive worldwide tour to over 20 countries including Santiago (Chile), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre, Rio De Janeiro (Brazil), London (UK), Düsseldorf, Berlin, Munich (Germany), Prague (Czech Republic), Odessa, Kiev (Ukraine), Saint-Petersburg, Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don, Moscow (Russia), Tel Aviv (Israel), Minsk (Belarus), and an extensive tour throughout the USA and Canada.
Yanni gained visibility as the result of his November 1990 appearances in People magazine and on The Oprah Winfrey Show with actress Linda Evans, with whom he had been in a relationship since 1989. However, high-visibility appearances on public television, best-selling records and videos, and overflow concerts earned him recognition beyond his relationship with Evans.
Dare to Dream, released in 1992, was Yanni’s first Grammy-nominated album. It included “Aria,” a song based on Léo Delibes’ The Flower Duet (Lakmé, 1883) and popularized by an award-winning British Airways commercial. A second Grammy-nominated album, In My Time, followed in 1993.
In 2000, after the two-year hiatus, Yanni released If I Could Tell You, his first studio album in seven years. The album sold 55,000 copies in its first week and landed at No. 20 on the Billboard charts, his highest debut to date. Yanni described the album as more of an even-tempered “listening” album, less dramatic than the live concert albums Live at the Acropolis or Tribute.
Yanni’s 2010-2013 tours included new vocalists, distinct from the 2008–2009 Yanni Voices vocalists. Yanni performed in China in the February 9, 2013, CCTV Spring Festival Gala (annual audience 700 million with Chinese zither artist Chang Jing in what was the first year that CCTV had invited foreign artists to perform.
